Bruker D8 Configurations

Bruker-AXS D8 Discover Instrument Configurations

Mostly the instrument is configured with GADDS at 20 cm. The following represents the other common configurations possible and can be arranged.

Rules for Reconfiguration
  • Facility specialist must reconfigure instrument unless user has been trained to do so.
  • Reservations made for 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM during the week will be reconfigured automatically according to selection made on the reservation calendar, provided the reservation is made before 8:00 AM.
  • If you require a reconfiguration for a reservation outside of these times, then:
        1) Make the reservation on the calendar
        2) Contact the specialist to confirm that he will be available for the reconfiguration.
  • Reconfiguration takes 15 minutes or less.

GADDS - 15 cm

Area detector at medium distance from sample. This allows full range movement of sample cradle with angular coverage of about 35 degrees.

X-Ray tube position: GADDS1 position
Incident beam optics: Göbel Mirror + 1.2mm MES + 0.5mm PS + 0.5mm Snout
Sample holder: Vacuum chuck, spring-load, or capillary
Diffracted beam optics: None
Detector: GADDS area detector
Detector Position: 15 cm
Variations: None

GADDS - 10 cm

Area detector at close distance from sample. Sample cradle movement is limited, but angular coverage is about 50 degrees.

X-Ray tube position: GADDS1 position
Incident beam optics: Göbel Mirror + 1.2mm MES + 0.5mm PS + 0.5mm Snout
Sample holder: Vacuum chuck, spring-load, or capillary
Diffracted beam optics: None
Detector: GADDS area detector
Detector Position: 10 cm
Variations: None

GADDS - Trans.

Area detector at closest distance from sample. Little or no sample cradle movement possible. Angular coverage is about 60 degrees. A beamstop allows data collection at low values of 2theta.

X-Ray tube position: Red line
Incident beam optics: Göbel Mirror + 1.2mm MES + 0.5mm PS + 0.5mm Snout + beamstop
Sample holder: capillary or fiber holder
Diffracted beam optics: None
Detector: GADDS area detector
Detector Position: 7.5 cm
Variations: None

Point Detector XRR

X-Ray Reflectivity configuration. Point detector and auto-absorber allow large dynamic range.

X-Ray tube position: Red line
Incident beam optics: Göbel Mirror + small MES + Auto Absorber
Sample holder: Vacuum Chuck
Diffracted beam optics: Standard aperture slit assembly (SS, soller slit, DetS)
Detector: Point detector with narrow opening slit holder
Detector Position: Any
Variations: Knife edge
PS and snout added to reduce beam size

Point Detector II - beam

Parallel beam XRD (PB - XRD) configuration. Also used for Grazing Incidence XRD (GIXD).

X-Ray tube position: Just short of 3rd positioning pin
Incident beam optics: Göbel Mirror + 0.8 or 1mm MES
Sample holder: Vacuum Chuck
Diffracted beam optics: 0.35 degree PPC
Detector: Detector Point detector with wide opening holder
Detector Position: 250 mm
Variations: 0.12 degree PPC
PS and snout added to reduce beam size
