Research Interests

Carnes’ research focuses extensively on interdisciplinary research projects aimed at combining inorganic nanomaterials with biological materials and living cells to create novel solutions to problems in public health, agriculture, and the environment.


Eric Carnes received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Mexico, culminating in 2008. He then joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico as both a Lecturer and Research Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering, where he served until 2012 before joining Sandia National Laboratories as a Principal Member of the Technical Staff. He recently transitioned back into academia in 2017 as a Research Associate Professor in the Office of Research and Economic Development at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He works at the diverse interdisciplinary nexus of biology, chemical engineering, and materials science, which has resulted in several licensed patents as well as publications in Science, Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Materials, ACS Nano, and other journals.
